Hard Disk Failure

Storage devices like hard disks, flash memories are marvelous technological devices. You can carry all your personal data, Outlook PST Mail, Outlook Express mail, even in your pocket. In your laptop, you can have all the business data, documents, all at the convenience of your fingertips. Tethered wirelessly via a telecommunication network, you in seamless continuity with your business and partners wherever you are in the world.

But with the convenience comes business risk. All your data can be wiped out in a single power outage, or a laptop being dropped, or a careless wave of the arm that sends coffee spilling into the innards of your computer.

Your hard drive is a mechanical device and is naturally subject to mechanical failure. It is wonderful that hard disk capacities keep jumping and the price per unit of storage falls. Your hard disk that came with your spanking new laptop can easily contain all the data of your business. That is years and years of blood, sweat and tears all kept in easy access on a tiny 2.5” hard disk. Supremely convenient. But look at the warranty that comes with it. One year? That’s right!

The little hard disk can indeed hold all your data but the manufacturers’ confidence in the durability of their product is shown in the period of warranty. Not only that - read the fine print of the warranty that comes with your computer or hard disk. There is absolutely nothing mentioned about guaranteeing the integrity of the data on the hard disk.

That’s right. Should your hard disk fail for any reason falling within the manufacturer’s terms of warranty like a hard disk crash or Read Write head crash, forget about any recover data or undelete data services from the manufacturer. They will – at most – only supply you with another hard disk. Your data is gone!

There could be a fire breaking out in your office or water damage because of floods, burst water pipes. The disaster to your physical assets, you can almost always get back. But the disaster in the loss of your data and the interrupt in your business continuity is many times more costly and recovery is even more of a concern.

Your data loss could be as a result of human error such as someone deleting a file by mistake. Or, and this is a common occurrence, saving over a carefully crafted proposal with something else. Can you undelete data that has been deleted by accident? No technology can prevent human error. And with more powerful computers, the extent of damage and data loss is even greater.

What will happen if your laptop is running off the mains in a third-world country and there is a power surge. Or if your computer is jacked in and lightning hits the building that you are in? Your computer may get fried – extra crispy. And your data – wiped out! Can you recover data?

You feel that your computer system is safe as you have the latest anti-virus programs and firewalls that your IT department ensures is rigorously updated. But consider how very often virus updates are issued. That points to one undeniable fact: the folks who write viruses are always one step ahead.

All you need is a virulent virus and a careless staff member downloading something that he or she shouldn’t and your network of computers and all your data is compromised. You could be the target of a hacker. Or a disgruntled staff member may deliberately sabotage your business computer system. Can you do hard disk data recovery or even RAID disk recovery?

Data damage could happen out of neglect, failure, or pure malice. All your data can be wiped out or its integrity is compromised. Like someone having a heart attack. Everything grinds to a halt. You need data recovery and you need it quickly. For data recovery Singapore offers some dubious choices. Out of a natural instinct to save a few bucks, you will be tempted to go to some backroom hack that advertises his data recovery services on a handwritten piece of cardboard or obviously homemade printout done on a cheap printer. They will definitely be cheaper. Why? They are untrained, have no clean room facilities or equipment and software. RAID disk recovery? Forgot it! You will be lucky if they could recover data of any use, or your Outlook PST Mail files.

Why trust your precious data to someone who does it as a sideline? But there’s no risk and it’s cheaper, you say. You say: if it doesn’t work, then I’ll seek out the professionals.

Remember that today’s hard disk even RAID arrays are packing in more and more capacity within less and less space. Material engineering notwithstanding, something’s got to give somewhere along the line. What caused your data to be compromised in the first instance may still be recoverable. If your delicate hard disk is roughly and wrongly handled, you stand to permanently lose more or all your data that is left on your hard disk. Remember this if nothing else: the further damage done by an untrained hack could render your hard disk irreparable and your precious data will be forever gone.
